JAN KUNC (1883-1976)

--**New info: June 30, 2004-- Hymnals only show that this CHRISTUS VINCIT is : "Traditional Chant", "Traditional melody", or "Anonymous", and we could never know when and whom it came from.   Mr. Petr Chaloupsky, music director, composer and organist at Dominican Priory, church St.Gilles, Prague, however sent me information about Jan Kunc, the composer of Christus Vincit on this page, as follows. Thank you very much for this information.

curriculum vitae
Jan Kunc (1883-1976) is czech composer, pedagogue and writer. He was a pupil of czech composer Leos Janacek in teacher's institution (1898-1902) and organ school (1902-1903). He studied composition with Vitezslav Novak (1905-1906). During years 1919-1945, he was professor of Brno's conservatory and (1923-1945) he was director of this institution.

He composed music for piano, chamber music, mixed choir's, solo vocal or symphonic poems. In 1935 He created official harmonisation of Czech state anthem.
The melody Christus Vincit (1933) is introductory melody (sonnet) of Radio Vaticana. This melody is also in official czech hymn-book number 631. It is damage, that modern music walked by other way, than J.Kunc composed and publicized.
